In November of 2023, Deco broke the news of the club’s intention to make summer loanees Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo’s signings permanent. After arriving at Barcelona, Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo went straight into Xavi’s starting lineup, putting in great performances.
Back in November, Deco was already considering keeping a hold of the two players.
“We are still in November, it is early. But of course we are already thinking about it,” he told RAC1.
“We see how the season is going. There is no doubt that we want to have them next season because they are good for the squad.”
“We are happy with their performance. How? We’ll see, these are discussions for later.” said Deco.
Sadly, things took a turn for Felix, and his performance has dropped in recent games. In the second half of the season, after some disappointing performances, Xavi dropped Felix from the starting lineup. Reportedly, the club changed its earlier decision to make Felix’s loan permanent. However, Jorge Mendes has come out saying that Barcelona still wants to make the signings of Joao Felix and Cancelo permanent.
“Barcelona want to keep both João Félix and João Cancelo beyond this season, they want to make the deals permanent,” said Jorge Mendes
“Criticism for João Félix? His performances have been very good so far,” he told Record.
Besides criticism of Felix’s recent performances, questions are being asked over Joao Cancelo’s contribution, especially defensively, as the team keeps leaking goals.
In Barcelona’s 4-2 win against Real Betis, coming off the bench, Felix scored a brilliant goal with the outside of his boot. This may have emboldened Jorge Mendes to make his recent statements.
Also, keeping both players will incur a substantial financial cost to the club. Considering the club’s financial status, it’s difficult to see how the club could pull this move without breaking FFP rules.
